Instagram Hashtag Generator

How many hashtags should you use?

Instagram now suggests using 3 to 5 relevant hashtags rather than 30. Hashtags help Instagram understand your post, but the post itself, its caption and early engagement matter more for reach.

The mix that works

• Niche hashtags describe exactly what the post is about. These bring the most relevant viewers.
• Local hashtags like your city or area help local customers find you.
• Keyword hashtags match the words people search for.
• Broad hashtags are huge and crowded. Use one at most.

Hashtag mistakes to avoid

• Copying the same 30 hashtags on every post.
• Using hashtags that have nothing to do with the post.
• Putting keywords only in hashtags. Write them in the caption too, because Instagram search reads captions.

Frequently asked questions

How many hashtags does Instagram allow?

Up to 30 per post, but Instagram recommends 3 to 5 relevant ones. This tool lets you pick exactly the ones you want.

Should I put hashtags in the caption or the first comment?

Both work, but the caption is safer because the hashtags are there from the moment the post goes live.

Do hashtags still work in 2026?

Yes, as a signal of what your post is about. They work best when they are specific and match the caption.
